The pub name gives away the history of the village, which was dominated for centuries by the owners of Montacute House. The building is late Georgian and laid out as a coaching inn. The arched doorway is now filled in, but horses would once have been led through it to stables at the back. The Phelips Arms still offers accommodation as well as the traditional beer and skittles. Food is served both indoors and in the walled garden.
