This Regency-style tavern was built in 1837 and has played host to famous diners such as William Thackeray, Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens (the latter refers to it in “Our Mutual Friend”). After the decline of trade in the 19th century, the tavern lost some of its grandeur and became a seamen’s hostel, but it was refurbished in the 1960s. The pub’s riverside location, with views of the Millennium Dome, is one of its primary attractions.
