The Royal Standard of England is the oldest free house in England and has served the public ever since the Saxons used the local well for brewing over 900 years ago. It is the only pub in the country to bear this full title; a name change from The Ship was allegedly agreed by King Charles II as a ’thank you’ for being sheltered here when he attempted to escape to France in 1651. There are highwaymen connections also, with Dick Turpin said to have lodged here between sorties in Cut-throat Wood, at nearby Holtspur.
