This is no ordinary pub. As well as being one of the oldest in Cambridge, it is world renowned for being popular with scientists due to its proximity to the University’s Cavendish laboratories. It was the place that the first announcement was made that DNA had been discovered. In 1953 Francis Crick and James Watson burst into their local pub and announced they had discovered the ‘the secret of life’. They explained the way genetic information is carried in DNA to the amazement of locals; this single moment has been recognised as one of the most important scientific discoveries of the twentieth Century.
